With Arctic Tub you get a high-quality, durable ice bath for your personal cold-plunge experience. Planning began in Cologne; today we partly manufacture our perfectly insulated cold tubs (Polar Bear Tub) in the Sauerland region, using state-of-the-art technology and robust materials. Whether you’re an athlete, a biohacker or simply health-conscious, our ice baths give you safe and effective cold therapy, delivered throughout Germany and the EU.
Ice bathing, also known as cold water immersion, gives you far more than a quick refresh. Numerous scientific studies confirm the positive effects on your body, especially on your immune system, your metabolism and your physical and mental resilience.
As soon as you immerse yourself in cold water, your body activates the sympathetic nervous system and releases more noradrenaline. This neurotransmitter sharpens your focus and attention while promoting anti-inflammatory processes – particularly helpful with chronic complaints.
A three- to five-minute ice bath stimulates your circulation, eases sore muscles and stabilises your cardiovascular system. Thermogenesis slightly raises your calorie burn – up to 200 calories per session is realistic. Regular cold exposure also stimulates your brown fat tissue, which contributes to your body’s own heat production.
Cold exposure stimulates not only your circulation but also your fat metabolism. Regular ice bathing activates your brown fat tissue in particular – an energy-burning type of tissue. Combined with a healthy diet and exercise, this can help you reduce body fat.
Ice bathing can have a positive effect on your skin by stimulating circulation and tightening your pores. It reduces inflammation and contributes to clearer, more radiant and firmer skin.
A controlled start is key to enjoying the benefits safely and effectively. It’s best to acclimatise to the cold gradually, for example with cold showers in everyday life. Conscious breathing helps you handle the cold stimulus mentally. As a beginner, never bathe alone and limit your time in the water to a maximum of one minute at first.
Whether daily ice bathing makes sense for you depends on your condition and your goal. For most people, two to three times a week has proven effective. If you respond well to the cold, you can bathe more often, but make sure you allow enough recovery.
If you want to try ice bathing for the first time, here’s the best way to start:
You don’t need extreme temperatures for an effective ice bath. Water at 10 to 15 °C already has a noticeable effect. Cold tap water, perhaps with a little ice added, is all you need. Dedicated containers such as ice baths or wooden barrels keep the temperature constant and make the experience more comfortable.
You’ll usually wear swimwear for ice bathing. Neoprene gloves and socks are also recommended to protect your sensitive extremities, as well as a hat so you don’t lose too much heat through your head. After the bath, change into warm, dry clothing.
After ice bathing, it’s better to warm up naturally rather than heating up quickly with a hot shower. Your body benefits from regulating itself. Warm clothing, movement and hot drinks help you retain the positive effects and avoid cold shock.
The effect is based on a targeted thermal stimulus. As soon as cold water hits your skin, your blood vessels constrict (vasoconstriction) to protect your core temperature. At the same time, your body generates heat through thermogenesis. With regular cold exposure, your cold adaptation improves: your body learns to respond more efficiently to temperature changes.
After around two to three minutes in ice water, it also releases hormones such as adrenaline, endorphins and cortisol.
Short ice baths of two to three minutes are already enough to achieve sympathetic activation and the anti-inflammatory effect. Combined with exercise, this supports your recovery and slightly increases your energy expenditure.
You activate your brown fat tissue through repeated cold exposure. Ice baths of several minutes over several weeks can increase the activity of this thermogenic tissue. It burns energy to produce heat and can therefore help with weight management.
If you’re healthy and suitably acclimatised to the cold, a five-minute ice bath is generally safe. Still, take your individual circumstances into account. If you have pre-existing conditions, consult a doctor beforehand.
Ice bathing offers a wide range of physical and mental effects – from faster recovery and anti-inflammatory processes to support with energy expenditure. It relieves stress through the release of endorphins, lifts your mood by boosting hormone production and promotes the production of white blood cells, strengthening the immune system. The key is a mindful start, regular practice and the right conditions.
Arctic Tub supports you in building a professional ice-bathing routine with high-quality, durable cold tubs, delivered throughout Germany and the EU.
